Background

Building upon the previous year's success, the 3rd Sumatra Coal Outlook Conference will return on August 7, 2024 with a theme of Sustainable Development of Sumatra's Coal Potential.

As one of Indonesia's coal production powerhouses, Sumatra holds immense potential to fuel the nation's energy needs. However, transportation challenges have historically limited Sumatra's coal potential.

Now, with major investments in hauling roads, railways, and riverways, the region is on the brink of unlocking Sumatra's vast coal potential and ensuring efficient, cost-effective coal delivery.

In 2023, Indonesia produced 775 million tons of coal, with 82% originating from Kalimantan and only 18% from Sumatra. East Kalimantan leads in production, followed by South Kalimantan and South Sumatra.

According to an analysis by PT Kaldera Energi Nusantara, Sumatra's output, totaling 140 million tons, is primarily from South Sumatra (75.7%), followed by Jambi (10.7%) and Aceh (5.7%). South Sumatra's logistical advantage, with access to railways, roads, and rivers, contributes to its dominance.

The coal quality varies across provinces, with Aceh, Riau, and Jambi mainly producing lower-grade coal (GAR <3400), while South Sumatra and Bengkulu have a more balanced production across calorie ranges.

Sumatra exported approximately 74.5 million tons of coal in 2023, primarily to China and India, while domestic consumption reached 65.5 million tons. South Sumatra dominates exports, accounting for 71.8% of the total. Domestic demand remains high due to the proximity of coal-consuming industries in Java and Sumatra.

Despite significant reserves, Sumatra faces production constraints. Logistical bottlenecks, price-sensitive low-calorie coal, and land clearance issues hinder increased output.

South Sumatra, while having the best logistics network, grapples with land clearance conflicts and potential bottlenecks due to river siltation and bridge congestion. Jambi lacks dedicated coal roads, leading to community conflicts and transport limitations.

The 3rd Sumatra Coal Outlook Conference will tackle head-on the challenges that have historically constrained Sumatra's coal production. With a focus on infrastructure development, logistical solutions, and sustainable mining practices, the conference aims to unlock the full potential of this abundant resource.

Participants will gain valuable insights into overcoming transportation bottlenecks, addressing land clearance issues, and optimizing the production and distribution of coal, including the price-sensitive low-calorie coal that is increasingly sought after by international markets.

The conference will also explore the growing demand for Sumatran coal from India, China, ASEAN, and domestic industries.

By bringing together industry leaders, policymakers, and experts, the conference will foster collaboration and knowledge-sharing that can pave the way for the sustainable growth of Sumatra's coal sector.
