The government's verification team has started to examine the operation of copper and gold mining company PT Freeport Indonesia in Irian Jaya, Bisnis Indonesia reported.

The paper quoted new director general of mining Surna Tjahjadiningrat as saying that the so-called Integrated Team for the Evaluation of the Implementation of PT Freeport Indonesia's Contract of Work was established based on the decree of Coordinating Minister of Economy, Finance and Industry issued on March 20, 2000.

"The team will work for three months from the issuance date of the Coordinating Minister of Economy and Industry and Finance," Surna said after the ceremony marking his installment as the new director general of mining.

The team will study whether the company had complied with the governmental regulations in its environmental protection program and whether the company had done enough to help the local people, said the decree obtained by the paper. (*)
