Two coal trains crash in Lampung, killing two

Two men were killed when two coal trains heading from and to Tarakan coal terminal in Bandar Lampung crashed a head-on-head on early morning,Tuesday near the Cempaka train station near Kotabumi, North Lampung.

The four locomotives, which pulled the coal railway coaches, were seriously damaged during the accident, which took place at about two in the morning, according to witnesses.

One of the train, KA BBR no 24, was on its way from the Tarakan coal terminal to pick more coal from Tanjung Enim coal station in South Sumatra when it crashed against the KA BBR no-15 train, which carried coal from the station to the terminal.

The trains were operated by state owned railway operator PT Kereta Indonesia in cooperation with the state owned PT Tambang Batu Bara Bukit Asam to transport the later's coal from its mining sites in Tanjung Enim to the Tarakan terminal in Panjang, Lampung.

The coal is shipped to feed coal-fired power plants in Suralaya, Merak, and West Java. (*)
