French oil gas company PT Total Indonesie officially launched on Wednesday the operation of its Peciko gas field in East Kalimantan, the Kaltim Post daily reported.

The launching ceremony was held in Jakarta attended by Minister of Mines and Energy Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

The Peciko gas field is estimated to have gas reserves of around 6.2 TCF (trillion cubic feet) or equal to 1.2 barrel of oil. This has put Total to become Indonesia's largest gas producer and East Kalimantan to be the province with the largest gas reserves.

The Peciko gas field is projected to be able to produce gas between 20 to 30 years. (*)
