The Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) Ministry said it is currently developing two dams in North Sulawesi with a combined water storage capacity of 39.47 million cubic meters (m3) of water.

The two dams development is part of the government's drive to increase the country's water storage ratio to 120 meter cubic (m3) per capita per year from 50 m3 per capita per year by 2030.

The two dams are Kuwil Kawangkoan dam in North Minahasa Regency and Lolak Dam in Bolaang Mongondow Regency, North Sulawesi.

"At present, out of 7.3 million hectares of irrigated land area, only 11 percent has secured water from the existing dams. With the completion of 65 dams, the water storage ratio in the province will increase to 19-20 percent," said PUPR Minister Basuki Hadimuljono.

Kuwil Kawangkooan dam will have storage capacity of 23.37 million m3 and the size of 139 hectares. The dam will function as a source of raw water at capacity of 4.50 m3 per second, flood controlling at volume of 470 m3 per second and hydro-power plant with installed capacity of 1.4 MW.

The Kuwil Kawangkooan dam's construction began in 2016 with total cost to build the dam amounted to Rp1.46 trillion. The dam's construction progress is now 31.39 percent complete and is targeted to begin commercial operation in 2021.

Lolak Dam construction has also been started in 2016. The dam's construction is now 57 percent complete and targeted to be finalized at end of 2020. The Lolak dam has water storage capacity of 16.10 million m3, covering 97.46 hectares of land.

The Lolak dam will become a source of water for 2,214 hectares of irrigation area, raw drinking water at volume of 500 liters per second and hydro-power plant 3.3 MW. The total cost to develop the dam reach Rp1.71 trillion.
