Indonesian state-owned power company PT PLN (Persero) is partnering with public transportation operators Transjakarta and Damri, along with the Directorate General of New Renewable Energy (DG NRE), to trial a hydrogen-fueled bus in 2025. This marks a significant step in the country’s efforts toward sustainable energy in public transport.
Ricky Cahya Andrian, Vice President of Decarbonisation at PLN, confirmed the pilot project, which will assess the feasibility of hydrogen as an alternative fuel source. “We plan to trial run one hydrogen-fueled bus in collaboration with Transjakarta, Damri, and DG NRE next year,” Andrian said, though further details on the bus type were not provided.

The initiative is part of PLN’s broader decarbonization strategy, following the company’s development of its first hydrogen refueling station in Senayan, Jakarta, earlier in 2024. The trial is anticipated to offer valuable insights into the use of hydrogen in public transportation, supporting Indonesia’s commitment to reducing its carbon emissions.
