PHR discovers new oil, gas reserves in Rokan block

PT Pertamina Hulu Rokan (PHR), the operator of the Rokan block in Riau Province, has discovered potential new oil and gas resources and reserves at existing mature fields through the application of new concepts and studies.

This discovery is part of the state-owned company's commitment to extending the operational life of the Rokan block through innovative exploration strategies.

Edwil Suzandi, EVP of Upstream Business at PHR, said in a statement Thursday that the company continues to carry out studies and innovations in exploration efforts to increase production in the Rokan block, including studies of shallow target exploration potential, one of which is the significant findings in the Telisa reservoirs.

“Currently, the average production of the Rokan block is around 160 thousand barrels of oil per day (BOPD) from assets of approximately 6,400 m2. PHR is moving quickly to look for new resources and reserves in the most productive working areas in Indonesia," he said in the statement.

The company, he said, is oriented and focused on implementing new concepts and technology in existing areas.

The company can also now more quickly predict the risks and uncertainties of discovering new reserves in mature working areas, he said.  Mature oil fields are also seen as attractive in uncertain times due to regular and reliable investment.

"For this reason, the PHR exploration team re-evaluated all subsurface aspects (geology, geophysics and reservoirs) in existing areas by optimizing seismic data and previous well logs through a new concept of subsurface interpretation.

"Apart from that, PHR also applies new concepts and understanding to the oil generation, accumulation and capture system (petroleum system)," he said.

The application of this method has succeeded in increasing the discovery portfolio of additional in-place exploration resources of around 350 million barrels of oil in the Telisa formation, the statement said.

This method succeeds in achieving efficiency without incurring significant exploration investment costs through well drilling.

Another exploration discovery activity that has currently been and is being matured and evaluated is the potential of the Tanjung, Pematang and Basement reservoirs, the statement said.

Edwil said this discovery also shows that although the Rokan block is an area with relatively mature hydrocarbons, it still has significant remaining exploration potential.

"This discovery has had a very positive impact on the target of finding new resources in Rokan," he said.

Edwil said that the plan is that a volume of new resources will soon be handed over from the PHR exploration team to the PHR development team to be produced to increase oil and gas production so that these findings will be able to maintain the continuity of the national energy supply.
