State-owned energy company PT Pertamina (Persero), through its subsidiary PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy (IDX: PGEO), is set to complete its green hydrogen pilot project at the Ulubelu geothermal plant by 2025. The hydrogen produced will be used at PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional (KPI) Refinery Unit (RU) III Plaju in Palembang, South Sumatra Province, to support polypropylene production.
“The development of this green hydrogen pilot plant will utilize electricity from PGE’s geothermal power plant (PLTP) to produce carbon-emission-free green hydrogen at a capacity of around 100 kg per day, which will be supplied to RU-III Plaju. This project will be completed by 2025," said Oki Muraza, Technology Innovation at the Directorate of Strategy, Portfolio, and New Ventures of Pertamina, during the Talkshow Beyond Zero Events 2025 on Friday (Feb. 14, 2025).

PGEO previously reported that it was conducting a technology selection study for electrolyzers and a commercial-scale feasibility study on geothermal utilization in collaboration with GIZ.
The Ulubelu geothermal area in Lampung Province has been identified as a key location for the project, which is part of Pertamina’s broader efforts to integrate renewable energy into industrial operations. With a potential production capacity of up to 8,600 kg of green hydrogen per day, the pilot phase will initially produce 100 kg per day.
The green hydrogen will be used to support operations at KPI's RU-III Plaju refinery, aligning with Indonesia’s clean energy transition goals and Pertamina’s decarbonization strategy.
