Pertamina New and Renewable Energy (PNRE), a renewable energy sub-holding of state oil, gas company PT Pertamina (Persero) is exploring the potential development of nuclear power plants, alongside wind energy, as part of its clean energy strategy.
PNRE CEO John Anis stated that nuclear energy is being evaluated as a long-term power source, but the company is still in the early stages of assessment and partnership discussions. The company is currently engaging with potential partners to examine feasibility and suitable technologies.
"From wind to nuclear, we are exploring all clean energy potentials," Anis said in a media briefing on March 10, 2025. He emphasized that several factors must be considered, including Indonesia’s energy needs, geographical conditions, and regulatory approval before moving forward with any nuclear power project.

Technology selection remains a key focus in PNRE’s evaluation. Anis noted that thorium-based reactors are currently being studied, as thorium presents an alternative to uranium for nuclear fuel. Some nuclear technologies also offer waste recycling capabilities, which could provide additional advantages.
Despite ongoing feasibility studies and partner evaluations, PNRE has not yet decided on specific collaborations or technology providers. Anis underscored the complexity and variety of available nuclear technologies, stating that each option must be thoroughly analyzed before committing to a development plan.
