Official praises KEM

Head of the manpower office of the Kutai regency, East Kalimantan praised gold mining company Kelian Equatorial Mining (KEM) for its commitment to care for its workers and prepare them for the post-mining period, Kaltim Post reported.

"It's difficult to find companies that has a policy to guarantee the welfare of their workers as Kelian Equatorial Mining does," Nasir Umar said on Monday in the ceremony to sign the employment agreement between the company and the company's labor union.

He said under the agreement, the company will provide its workers more than required by the government's regulation. The company will among others provide training for its workers that they could continue earning a good livelihood after it closed its gold mine in 2004.

The agreement was signed following several demonstrations held by the workers. (*)
