Irian Jaya council to summon Freeport for a hearing

A member of the Irian Jaya provincial council said the council would summon copper and gold mining company PT Freeport Indonesia for a hearing in the near future, Cepos (Cendrewasih Post) daily reported.

Paulus Sumino, a commission head of the council, said the hearing was necessary to gather complete information on the company before the council take a stance over the company's operation.

The paper however did not give fixed date for the hearing.

Freeport has been under the attack from various parties over the alleged environmental damage it caused in the province. (*)
