Indonesia to expedite developments in Tangguh gas field

An official document indicated that Indonesian's head-of-state, President Abdurrahman Wahid, has ordered the stepping up of developments to the Tangguh gas field in the eastern province of Papua, formerly Irian Jaya.
The document quoted Wahid as saying that Tangguh field should be developed as rapidly as possible for the prosperity of the country. The field could produce up to 18 million tones of liquefied natural gas (LNG) a year for over 20 years, bringing a potential revenue of up to US$60 billion.
"Indonesia has a really big reserve of gas in the Wiriagar (Tangguh) field in Papua, with proven reserves of 14.4 trillion cubic feet of gas and proven and potential reserves at 23.7 trillion cubic feet."
While the move is expected to raise state revenues and help the process of economic recovery. The document was also quoted that the development of the gas field should also "enhance the prosperity of the people of Papua" and "continue to take into consideration the factor of environmental sustainability."
