IMA gives scholarship to 150 high school students in Greater Jakarta

The Indonesian Mining Association (IMA) has extended Rp 100 million in scholarships to 150 high school students in the Greater Jakarta area, with each student getting Rp 50,000 per month for the 2000/2001 study year.

Besides the money, the students would also get additional training from competent instructors so that they would be more motivated to study and get better performance in their studies.

The scholarships were symbolically handed over to student representatives in SMUN 115 high school in Kampung Rorotan, North Jakarta, on Thursday. In extending the scholarships, IMA has been cooperated with the Dompet Dhuafa Foundation of Republika daily. This is the second times IMA has given scholarship to students. Last year, IMA also extended Rp 100 million scholarships to junior high students.

IMA spokesperson Yuli Ismartono said that all students receiving IMA scholarships were from poor families and had good performance. They were all in the 10 best lists in their classes.

IMA chairman Benny Wahju said: "We believe that synergy, cooperation between businesses, the government and the society will have a positive impacts in improving education in Indonesia."

He noted that extending scholarships had been set as one of the association's main annual agendas.

AMI was established on May 29, 1975 to promote mining investment in Indonesia. AMI associate members currently total 133 companies, 23 mining companies that have been producing and 15 mining companies in their exploration stage.

Benny noted that some of AMI members had also given scholarships to students. One of its members even extended scholarships to 4.500 students of various levels. (*)
