Govt proposes 30-50% increase in public transportation tariffs

The Ministry of Communications has proposed to the House of Representatives a new list of public transportation tariffs which will saw a 30 percent to 50 percent increase starting September, 2000, Media Indonesia reported on Monday.
Director General of Land Transportation Santo Budiono said the government's proposal to raise public transportation tariffs by 30 percent to 50 percent had been based on various considerations.
"And this is far below those proposed by Organda," Santo said, referring to the organization of public transportation operators.
Nevertheless, Santo said the government was still awaiting responses from the society, including from non-governmental organizations.
Santo said this time, the government would not delay again the imposition of public transportation tariffs increase. (*)
