Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Arifin Tasrif had on November 15 signed a new Ministerial Decree No 227/2019 on the trial blending of 30 percent biofuel (derived from palm oil) into automotive diesel fuel, also known as the B30 policy.

The ministry said in a statement Monday that the government plans to start trial distribution of the B30 biodiesel early next year.

The upcoming trial distribution of the B30 biodiesel comes following successful trial application of the fuel in diesel engine.

The ministry said that with the trial distribution of the B30 biodiesel, there will be additional 72,000 kilo liters of biofuel requirement until the trial period ends.  For this year, the required biofuel volume to implement the B20 biodiesel policy is estimated at 6.6 million kl.

The government has required certain economic sectors such mining sector (heavy equipment used in mining), trains, and ships to use the B20 biodiesel.  The government is seeking to further increase the biofuel content in automotive diesel in a bid to help reduce costly fuel oil imports and provide support to the country’s palm oil industry.
