Monday, February 28 2000 - 04:00 PM WIB

Fishermen in Dumai particularly those who fish in the waters of Pulaupayung and Lubukgaung have complained of the oil pollution caused by oil tankers owned by the state oil and gas firm Pertamina unit in Dumai, Riau province.

Riau Post said that the pollution was caused by a leakage of oil from two of a dozen of Pertamina old tankers.

The paper said that two of the tankers recently sunk and when Pertamina tried to lift out the tankers, the oil spilled over.

Secretary of the local Dumai House of Representatives Ilyas Labai said that Pertamina had to be responsible for the oil pollution.

But he said that the local environmental impact assessment agency (Bapedalda) must investigate the allegation and conduct an audit. (*)
