Emirates Global Aluminium plans nuclear power plant in Indonesia

Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) is set to build a nuclear power plant in Indonesia, with a capacity of up to five gigawatts, according to a statement from the Indonesian Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs on Wednesday.

The ministry highlighted that high electricity prices and the lack of low-carbon electricity have delayed EGA’s plans to increase the capacity of an aluminium smelter owned by state-owned PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium (Asahan) in North Sumatra by up to 400,000 tonnes per year.

The announcement followed a meeting in Dubai between Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, and EGA CEO Abdulnasser Ibrahim Saif Bin Kalban, where they discussed the development of the aluminium industry in Indonesia.

In addition, Airlangga met with Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, the CEO of UAE state-owned renewable energy firm Masdar, to discuss ongoing and upcoming projects in Indonesia, including a 145-megawatt floating solar power plant on a reservoir in West Java and the development of a gas pipeline from Aceh to East Java.
