IDX-listed PT Elnusa Tbk, the upstream services subsidiary of state-owned upstream oil and gas company PT Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE), is set to conduct a seismic survey project in the eastern region of Indonesia, specifically targeting Bone and Seram.
This endeavor is part of Elnusa's commitment to conducting seismic surveys in non-oil block areas, as mandated by SKK Migas, the country's upstream oil and gas regulatory body, Elnusa said in a recent statement.
The survey covers an extensive area of approximately 700 km² in the waters near East Seram Regency, Maluku Province.
Seismic surveys represent the initial phase in the oil and gas exploration process, providing insights into hydrocarbon traps beneath the earth's surface. The current survey is entirely maritime-based, employing survey vessels equipped with streamer-type sensors and is expected to last around 60 days.

The significance of this 3D offshore seismic survey project lies in the untapped energy resources potential in the Bone and Seram regions of eastern Indonesia. The survey aims to create more precise and detailed mappings of the geological and stratigraphic structures beneath the seabed, aiding in identifying energy resource potentials in the area.
Agung Adi Susanto, Field Supervisor at PT Pertamina Hulu Energi, stated, "We have entrusted Elnusa to conduct the seismic survey in East Seram. Elnusa will coordinate with the local government before commencing the operations," during a technical presentation before the Acting Secretary of East Seram Regency, as quoted in the statement.
Over the past decade, Elnusa has consistently conducted seismic surveys both onshore and offshore. In fact, in the first quarter of 2024, Elnusa successfully completed onshore seismic survey work in West Java and Riau without any work-related accidents or equipment damage. This aligns with efforts to meet the target production of 1 million barrels of oil per day (bpd) and 12 billion standard cubic feet per day (BSCFD) of gas by 2030.
