The East Java provincial government plans to create sharia-based special economic zone (SEZ) in Madura as a move to stimulate the economic growth in the island.
"We have presented the plan to the Coordinating Minister for the Economy. We are hoping to create an Islamic Science Park which will become part of the sharia SEZ. If this plan is realized, this will the first sharia-based SEZ in Indonesia," East Java Governor Khofifah said on May 31.
She said the provincial government will set aside 101 hectares of the land to develop the sharia-based SEZ.
The East Java provincial Parliament (DPRD) members welcome the governor's plan. A member of the Commission D of DPRD of East Java Aliyadi Mustofa said the SEZ is expected to stimulate the economic growth on the Madura island and nearby areas.
"We welcome the plan and really appreciate it given that Madura has been left behind compared to other parts of East Java province," Mustofa was quoted by Jatim Newsroom as saying. (*)
