Construction of new C. Java airport to start in June

State-owned airport operator PT Angkasa Pura (AP) II said that construction of a new airport in Purbalingga, Central Java Province, called Jenderal Besar Sudirman Airport, is expected to start in June of this year.

AP II President Director Muhammad Awaludin said in a statement issued by the Central Java administration that construction process is targeted to be completed in 12 months. 

Awaludin met on Wednesday with Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo to discuss preparations for ground-breaking of the airport project, expected to be held after the upcoming Idul Fitri Celebration in June.

The Jenderal Besar Sudirman Airport in the first phase will a 1,600-meter runway to serve mid-size aircraft such as ATR 72-600.  The runway will be further expanded to 2,500-meter in the second phase development.

Ganjar Pranowo said that the new airport will help accelerate economic development in Purbalingga and surrounding areas.  Aside from the Jenderal Sudirman Airport, the Central Java administration is also planning two other new airports including Dewadaru Airport in Jepara, and Ngloram Airport in Blora.
