China Water Industry Group Limited (CWI) has signed a strategic agreement with the Sidoarjo Regency, East Java for its second landfill gas-to-energy project. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed on March 24, 2025, will utilize landfill gas from Sidoarjo's municipal waste, generating an estimated 3 megawatts (MW) of electricity by 2027.
The project is expected to produce around 24 million kWh of electricity annually, reducing approximately 90,000 tons of carbon emissions per year. The electricity generated will support Sidoarjo and surrounding areas while promoting environmental sustainability by transforming waste into clean, green energy.

Sidoarjo, located in East Java with a population of around 2.2 million, generates 700 tons of waste daily, providing a substantial feedstock for the landfill gas-to-energy project. This move aligns with the Indonesian government’s push towards increasing renewable energy capacity and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
Earlier last week, CWI also signed an MOU with Semarang Regency, Central Java, to manage the TPA Blondo Landfill. The agreement also focuses on landfill gas power generation, landfill operation, and leachate treatment.
CWI has been actively involved in developing renewable energy projects in Indonesia. Over the past year, the company has conducted site assessments for additional landfill sites suitable for energy conversion, deepening its engagement with local stakeholders and understanding the regulatory framework for renewable energy in the country.
