PT Borneo Alumindo Prima (BAP) has successfully completed the trial phase of its first-phase alumina plant project, which has an annual production capacity of 1 million tons per annum (MTPA). The facility is located in Matan Hilir Selatan District, Ketapang Regency, West Kalimantan. This milestone marks a significant step toward the company’s first alumina production, expected to commence in the first half of this year. The addition will bring Indonesia’s total alumina production capacity to 5 million tons per year.
“Despite the challenges of operating a bauxite smelter on the edge of Borneo Island, this achievement has not dampened the team’s spirit, especially during Chinese New Year celebrations. The lighting of fireworks at the facility symbolizes the completion of the trial phase and the readiness to begin full-scale production. PT Borneo Alumindo Prima continues to push forward toward its 1 million-ton production target in the first phase,” said Maftuch Nashichin, a BAP employee, in a statement last week.

BAP is 80% owned by HC-Asia Pacific Holdings Pte Ltd and 20% by Top Celestial Holdings Pte Ltd, both subsidiaries of Hangzhou Jinjiang Group Co Ltd. The project is planned to be developed in five phases, targeting a total annual production capacity of 6 million tons, which would make it the largest alumina producer in Indonesia. The total investment for the project is estimated at around US$3 billion.
According to Indonesia’s Ministry of Investment and Downstream Industry, the Ketapang Industrial Area, operated by PT Ketapang Bangun Sarana (KBS), will also host additional processing facilities for aluminum alloy, aluminum billet, and aluminum slab production.
