Independent power producer PT Indo Raya Tenaga (IRT), which owns the 2x1000 MW Jawa 9&10 coal-fired power plant project in Banten Province, announced on Friday that it has started testing of ammonia co-firing with initial firing at boiler #1 by adding liquid ammonia.
“From the result of this test, Jawa 9&10 is further ensured of its boiler capability that can operate within normal parameters. Moreover, as the first USC+SCR boiler in Indonesia that will significantly reduce NOx emission (which otherwise would be emitted from ammonia co-firing beyond 20%), this tested USC+SCR boiler may be able to use green ammonia as its fuel, for up to 60% (therefore reducing up to 60% of CO2 emission),” IRT said in a statement.
The company said that the potential usage of green ammonia as an alternative fuel for Jawa 9&10 USC+SCR power plant is being seriously studied, tested and promoted as a roadmap for Jawa 9&10 to become the most sustainable USC +SCR power plant in Indonesia in the future.

IRT is owned by Indonesia’s state-owned electricity firm PT PLN subsidiary PT PLN Indonesia Power, IDX-listed PT Barito Pacific Tbk, and South Korea’s KEPCO. The Jawa 9 and 10 coal power plant project is now targeted to start commercial operations in October 2024, said Agung Siswanto, Corporate Secretary of PT PLN Indonesia Power in June of this year. The power plant deploys the ultra super-critical (USC) technology.
The ammonia co-firing testing is being conducted by South Korea’s Doosan as the EPC contractor.
In September of this year, IRT signed an MoU with Doosan to transform the Jawa 9&10 coal-fired power plant into a hybrid power plant utilizing green ammonia and green hydrogen.
IRT said it decided to utilize green ammonia and green hydrogen at the Jawa 9&10 power plant because the power plant uses SCR technology, which enables the power plant to use up to 60 percent of ammonia as fuel.
