Thermal coal consumption in Asia has been significantly increasing since the year 2000 with China and India, the largest export markets of Indonesia, as the main drivers.

Indonesia’s coal export to India has continued to rise over the past three years, from 90.51 million tons in 2017 to 101 million tons in 2019, according to Indonesian Coal Mining Association (ICMA).

However, the recent outbreak of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (Covid-19) has changed the world’s coal demand and supply market.

The question now is would this increasing trend of Indonesian coal export to India be sustainable after the Covid-19 pandemic?

A number of Indonesian coal mining companies previously reported that their coal export to India were disrupted when India government imposed lockdown policy to stop the spread of Covid-19 as the lockdown policy has disrupted the coal shipment to India.
