Background

Coal would remain vital energy sources for ASEAN countries in ensuring the long-term energy security in the region. Member countries of the association recently launched the so-called ASEAN Coal Business Roundtable Dialogue to explore the future of ASEAN’s coal trade and coal roles in energy transition.

ASEAN Center for Energy’s (ACE’s) 5th ASEAN Energy Outlook says the demand in primary energy in the region is expected to grow by an average of 3.4 percent per year from 627 to reach 1,450 million tons of oil equivalent in 2040.

In ASEAN, coal accounts for around 15% (72 GW) of power generation in the region and is expected to double its capacity by 2040.

Coal resource is abundant in ASEAN for many years to come, forecasted to be about 12–14 billion metric tons in 2035.

The third series of webinar on coal market would explore opportunities and challenges of coal market outlook in ASEAN countries in the aftermath of Covid-a9 pandemic.

The webinar would discuss:

  • Coal supply and demand outlook and future trend in ASEAN post the Covid-19.
  • What is the outlook of coal-fired power plant projects in ASEAN countries? What does it mean for coal demand trend?
  • The prospects for Indonesian coal to ASEAN markets in 2020 – opportunities and challenges.
  • What is the coal role in energy security and power project in ASEAN members of Indonesia, Philippines and Vietnam?
